WESTERN SPRINGS — Lyons Township senior Haley Prokaski was excited to finally compete Saturday.

She was also pleased with how the Lions performed in their own season-opening invitational in Western Springs.

“I think it went really well,” Prokaski said. “We were so excited to race ever since we started training back in June. We went off with a bang.”

Marist won the 10-team invite with 67 points, followed by Valparaiso (71), Sandburg (79) and LT (91).

Lincoln-Way West’s Natalie Waters was the individual winner with a time of 18:06.63. Marist’s Molly Krawczykowski took second (18:11.36).

Prokaski led the Lions with a ninth-place finish (19:02.40).

“I’m surprised with how I did,” Prokaski said. “At our intrasquad race a few weeks ago, I got 20:01 and I dropped almost a minute off my time. I guess it was all the anticipation and anxiety that helped me take off.”

LT’s Lexy Rudofski took 12th (19:08.26), while Randie Speir was 17th (19:15.12) and Elaine Smith got 24th (19:36.08).

“I thought it was a very difficult race,” Rudofski said. “Me and Haley stuck together and helped each other a lot during the race. We were right with each other.”

Lions coach Stetson Steele would’ve liked a better performance to the start the season.

“The varsity struggled,” Steele said. “They just didn’t run as a pack well enough.”
