Girls Lacrosse: King rises to top for Lyons Township

Lyons Township senior Stephanie King’s mother encouraged her to play a sport as a freshman, so the student-athlete narrowed her choices to track and lacrosse.
“My mom convinced me to be involved in a spring sport,” King said. “I really didn’t feel like doing track at all. My friends told me I should try lacrosse, and it’s probably one of the best decisions in my life. It’s such a good sport — easy to pick up on — and I met so many friends.”
King had never even picked up a lacrosse stick before her freshman year, but has thrived in the sport. She earned All-West Suburban Conference honors last season, and is the second leading scorer this year for one of the best teams in program history.
“She made varsity as a sophomore and has come a long way,” said LT coach Jim Moy. “She started out playing defense, and we had her marking some of the better offensive players in the state and she did a great job. She is a very good offensive player and is an all-state candidate this year.”
King has 45 goals and 10 assists.
Moy credits his seniors for the team’s success this season.
“We have a group of seniors that have been playing together since they were sophomores,” Moy said. “They seem to have an ESP sense and know where everyone is on the field, which is helpful. I think we’re playing our best lacrosse of the season. We were in a bit of a lull against some good teams and had some setbacks, but everyone looks to be clicking.”
King is amazed with the progress of the program since she arrived.
“I had never been exposed to the sport before, and to see the team come so far since I was a freshman is amazing,” King said. “We’ve improved so much within a year, and it’s been a great experience. We have an amazing coaching staff that pushes every member of the team to play up to their abilities.”
LT (17-7), which is seeded No. 8 in the Montini Sectional, beat O’Fallon 17-6 in the sectional semifinals on May 17 and No. 9 Neuqua Valley 17-11 in the sectional final on Monday. The Lions have won six straight games.
