Western Springs Rotary to treat veterans

WESTERN SPRINGS — The Western Springs Rotary Club will honor veterans and first responders with a steak dinner next week.

The annual Veteran Steak Fry is from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 on the Village Green at the Water Tower.

Residents are invited to sponsor a veteran or first responder for $15. The veterans and first responders eat free.

“They are still down and out and they really appreciate the meal,” said Rotarian Larry Odelson. “Their stories are pretty interesting and they love the idea that people are sitting with them and listening to their stories.”

The veterans run the gamut of military conflicts.

“I think we had a couple from World War II last time, but definitely the Vietnam War and we’re getting some from the Iraq conflict,” Odelson said

The tradition began in 2000, and last year the Rotary cooked up 132 steaks, with only tow leftover.

Tickets can be purchased in advance from any Rotary Club of Western Springs member or by contacting Linda Johnson at (708) 246-0892.
