Western Springs allows chickens to roost

WESTERN SPRINGS — Village Board members Monday unanimous approved an ordinance that allows chickens to be housed within village limits. People looking to add a chicken coop on their property would have to get a temporary use permit and adhere to village regulations.
“It is similar to a deck or shed in that you would need a permit from the village,” said Martin Scott, director of community development.
Under the regulations, Western Springs residents could have no more than four chickens on their property and no roosters. The chickens would have to be kept in a covered outside enclosure or inside a residence or garage when left unattended.
Officials noted chickens would not be allowed to run at large and that no slaughtering of any poultry may occur outside on residential lots.
Trustee Edward Tymick said a test run at a residence resulted in few negatives comments, and several positives ones. He thought another family, besides the test-case family, may be applying for a permit to house chickens on their property.
