WESTERN SPRINGS — It may have opened its doors in June 2011, but Design Studio has been bringing beautiful looks to homes in the area since 1983.

Carol King and Paula Buttel are both 35-year residents of Western Springs. Illinois Artisans and best friends. Their business partnership started with a Holiday Boutique held in Carol’s home, which featured their own designs as well as a few other local artists.

After 13 years, the show was moved to Katherine Legge Memorial Park and then to the DuPage County Fairgrounds. Having become known as the premier Holiday Market in the Chicago area, Christmas at the Faire ran for 28 years.

“It is remarkable how many customers tell us they came to our shows years ago and still treasure those memories and Christmas adornments,” said Carol King. “And how excited they are to have found us again!”

Design Studio, 917 W. Burlington Ave., Western Springs, is filled to bursting with beautiful and unique home décor items, but King and Buttel have a lot more to offer.

“We believe beautiful spaces can be created on any budget,” said King.

Both ladies love to find bargains and use existing pieces in new ways.

Since 2000, King and Buttel worked as freelance designers, creating seasonal accessories for the gift industry, which can now be found in their shop.

“We love sharing our designs and finds with our customers and thought a cozy seasonal shop in the town we love would be a fun experience for the two of us,” said King. “We can ride our bikes to work and our families stop in to visit and help.”

The shop holds many events including artist trunk shows, including the upcoming Fall into Fall Event which includes Paula’s party presentation displays, “Vine Dining” tomato treats, and ideas for fall decorating and entertaining.
