Police writing tickets over Sheridan Road closure

As the Glencoe water main project that has closed over a mile of Sheridan Road to southbound traffic has progressed through its second week, a particular subset of drivers continue to try to go southbound, anyway.
They seem to be people who don’t live in Glencoe. More than two dozen have been caught, and they’re almost all residents of someplace else, who may not be aware of the restriction before they arrive.
The tickets come in bunches. “One goes through, and the next one says, I can go through, and the next one says, I can go through, too,” Deputy Public Safety Chief Al Kebby said Monday.
Case in point: Police nabbed six drivers who streamed lemming-like around the barricades the evening of June 7.
The ticket winners were from Evanston, Wilmette, Highland Park, Northbrook and Park Ridge. They ranged in age from 87 down to a 16-year-old girl driving on a permit.
Drivers might as well get used to it. Sheridan will be northbound only between Park Avenue on the south — downtown Glencoe — to Lake-Cook Road — the Highland Park boundary — until mid-August. Green Bay Road, the closest through street, is the official detour.
Kebby said that those who’ve been ticketed typically say they had someplace to go in a hurry. They didn’t seem to worry that haste might waste them in a head-on collision.
“They don’t get it,” he said.
Neither do some of the bicyclists, who tried to pedal right through on their weekend jaunts as if the warning signs and barricades didn’t exist, Kebby said.
“They obviously don’t think it applies to them,” he said.
