A Western Springs third-grader already is celebrating a first-place finish in the Tower Trot scheduled for May 26 after submitting the winning T-shirt design to be worn by hundreds of runners in the village’s annual race.

The drawing of Cass Kinsella, who attends St. John of the Cross School, will appear on a brown T-shirt commemorating the 35th annual race. The design was selected from among dozens of entries by third- through fifth-graders at four Western Springs elementary schools.

The Western Springs Recreation Department co-sponsored the contest with the Bear Necessities Pediatric Foundation, which raises money through a race partnership to fight cancer in children. Though runners’ entry fees don’t benefit the foundation, runners may obtain pledges or donations to benefit the nonprofit group. Details are at www.bearnecessities.org.

A 10K race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Forest Hills School, 5020 Central Ave., followed by a 5K race at 9:30 a.m. The entry fee for either event is $28 in advance and $32 on race day, beginning at 7 a.m. at the school.

Runners may register and pick up race packets from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the Recreation Center, 1500 Walker St.

Organizers also are sponsoring a Fun Run for children age 9 and younger, beginning at 8:45 a.m. No official scoring or awards are given in the race, which is less than a mile, but participants receive a T-shirt and official race number. Parents may run with their children as a warm-up for the 5K race.

Parking is available for runners and spectators at four churches along Wolf Road, between 51st and 53rd streets. Space is available at St. John of the Cross Church, Western Springs Christian Reformed Church, St. James Lutheran Church and the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs.
