Sgt. Edward Broche was honored last week for 23 years of service to the Western Springs Police Department, including the past 13 years as sergeant.

Broche retired Jan. 17 and was honored the following night, along with his family, during a ceremony at the Village Hall.

During his tenure, Broche served in both the patrol and investigation units. For many years he was the department’s traffic enforcement grant and recruitment team coordinator.

Deputy Chief Brian Budds said Broche was instrumental in starting the village’s peer jury program in 1997, which continues to be a community program.

“By being a peer juror, they learn social skills, how to speak with other people, and one of the most touching things is to see these kids grow from sixth- or seventh-graders,” Broche said in a 2007 interview with The Doings. “It’s a remarkable journey.”
