Beverly Moran has shopped consignment and been a consignee her whole life. So opening up a resale shop was inevitable. Her retail background as a department manager at Saks Fifth Avenue and as the original owner of the Ceramic Attic in Clarendon Hills, which she sold in 2005, gave her the confidence to make her dream become reality.
She opened her first resale store, Swap Shop, in Glen Ellyn in February 2011 and knew that her second store would be in Hinsdale, an upscale community that was lacking a high-end consignment shop. Kelsey Resale Boutique filled that niche and opened in March of this year.
Many consumers have been more than willing to sell their unwanted designer items. Couple that trend with the desire to find a good bargain and suddenly consignment shops are booming, becoming trendier and more selective than ever.
Customers frequently enter Kelsey’s thinking it’s a boutique, not a resale shop. The racks aren’t overstuffed and it doesn’t have that resale store odor to it.
“It’s not your typical resale shop,” Moran said. “It’s boutique versus resale shop.”
And like any boutique, she is constantly merchandising the store, changing window displays and offering services such as wish lists for brands and items customers might be looking for, such as a Chanel handbag.
Loyal customer and consignee Wendy Campos said that she always stops at Kelsey’s before heading to the mall and thinks the quality of the merchandise is great.
Moran is very specific when it comes to the merchandise she accepts for consignment. The items must be in excellent condition, in style (current trends only) and upscale.
She carries designer labels such as Gucci, Prada, Burberry and Armani along with Cole Haan, Tory Burch, Lilly Pulitzer and Trina Turk.
The shop also offers at-home consignment shopping, where staffers go to private homes and sort through items. Customers are also welcome to drop off merchandise at the store from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
Whether you’re unloading clothes and accessories or picking up some new togs at a great price, Kelsey Resale Boutique is a warm and inviting addition to Hinsdale. And you can’t beat the prices.
