The Hinsdale Auxiliary of Children’s Home + Aid has held their popular Derby Day event for nearly 60 years. The tradition has grown from a backyard potluck to an elegant celebration at various venues across the area.
More than 200 people headed to the Butterfield Country Club for this year’s May 5 event, dressed in their derby finest. Fancy hats with all the trimmings brought an air of Churchill Downs to the party.
The only twist was that, for the first time, the event was held as a post-party.
“Every year we run into conflicts with communions and other events,” explained Alyssa Guido, board chairwoman of the Auxiliary. “We wanted to ensure that as many people as wanted to make it, could come.”
And while the traditional derby betting was off, plenty of other activities made up for the lack. The Men’s Auxiliary hosted a putt and puff fundraiser, where participants were given three putts and a cigar.
A bar area included Derby Day favorites such as frosty Mint Juleps and the new Oaks Lily signature cocktail.
The evening also included auctions and raffles as well as a formal dinner and dancing.
Nancy Newell of Burr Ridge was honored with the auxiliary’s first Help, Hope and Opportunity award for her years of service and support. The group wanted to find a way to honor their associate members and let them know they were appreciated.
“Every year, Nancy continues to support the Home and Aid,” said Guido. “She’s someone who is still a familiar face and name to this group and who continues to be a role model to charities that help children.”
The event raised close to $60,000 with all proceeds going to the Marletta Darnall Schaumburg Child + Family Center for their programming efforts and food pantry.
