LA GRANGE — The Lyons Township High School literary magazine, Menagerie, recently received the American Scholastic Press Association’s highest award, First Place with Special Merit.

Menagerie also received an award for Outstanding Art.

Menagerie was one of only eight schools in the 2501+ enrollment category to win the highest award. Menagerie also was one of just 11 magazines to be recognized with outstanding artwork. Julia Sokolovski, class of 2011, was named the winning artist for her three works in the magazine.

In the association’s contest, each school magazine is scored on a point system and is awarded a first, second or third place. Those school publications with special and outstanding design and content receive a First Place with Special Merit.

“Menagerie has a dedicated student staff who works to produce a high-quality magazine that highlights both writing and artwork,” said art adviser Mary Rohlicek. “The art staff takes special care to use a unifying layout format with artwork that matches the tone of the written pieces.”

Menagerie sponsors include literary advisers James Maffey and Angela Gutierrez and art adviser Mary Rohlicek.
