Western Springs OKs new contract with police

WESTERN SPRINGS — Village officials have given final approval to a contract with the village’s police officers and moved money to cover the officers’ raises.

The two-year contract, retroactive to April 2011, was part of the reason that Village Board members Monday approved a budget amendment transferring $118,500 from cash reserves to the general fund.

Trustee James Horvath, chairman of the Finance Committee, said the officers’ contract is retroactive to April 2011 and the sergeants’ contract is retroactive to April 2012.

“Those (salary increases) were not included in the 2012 budget,” Horvath said. “That is the reason for the adjustment to the budget.”

Officers were given a 2.75 percent increase for each year of the contract.

The village’s $118,500 budget transfer covers:

• the combined retroactive pay increases for both contracts of $93,000

• overtime costs of $18,000.

• health insurance premiums of $7,500 caused by an under-estimation.

Trustees unanimously approved the budget transfer and the officers’ collective bargaining agreement between the village and Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 456.
