WESTERN SPRINGS — A pedestrian crossing sign on Ogden Avenue at Woodland Avenue was damaged at about 3 p.m. Saturday when a driver swerved to avoid another car and left the roadway, striking the sign.
Deputy Police Chief Brian Budds said the new enhanced crosswalk and signs had nothing to do with the crash. The driver swerved to avoid another vehicle that was stopped in traffic on eastbound Ogden waiting to turn into the Bemis Woods South parking lot.
Ryan W. Russ, 18, of 4218 Sunnyside Ave., Brookfield, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper overtaking following the two-vehicle crash. Russ’s vehicle struck the stopped eastbound vehicle.
The pedestrian crossing has been there, but on June 25 a warning sign was added that includes a flashing light activated by pedestrians or cyclists waiting to cross. But neighbors have said there have been more near misses since the sign went up, suggesting pedestrians who activated the light have a false sense of security, because traffic doesn’t always stop. Police have documented to accidents directly attributed to the crossing since the sign went up.
